Effective immediately, the Malaysian Immigration Department (MID) has announced stricter travel restrictions against Employment Pass (EP) holders undergoing the mandatory pass cancellation protocols before their final departure from the country. As the EP is automatically granted as a multiple-entry pass, EP holders have traditionally been able to exit and re-enter Malaysia freely during the cancellation process (as long as they re-enter the country before the cancellation date). However, the MID has confirmed that once the EP cancellation procedures have been filed, the pass will no longer grant these multiple-entry privileges and will be invalidated as soon as the holder exits Malaysia.

EP holders who have initiated the cancellation procedures and exit Malaysia with the intent to return will be granted a Social Visit Pass upon their re-entry. Visa nationals in this situation will also be required to obtain an Entry Visa from a Malaysian consulate abroad in order to re-enter the country. It is important to note that Social Visit Passes do not permit the holder to engage in any work activities; rather, they will be limited to acceptable business and social activities on this pass.
