Readers are reminded that the Islamic holy month of Ramadan is fast approaching. This year Ramadan will be observed starting approximately June 18, and will be concluded with the traditional Eid al-Fitr celebrations commencing around July 17. Note that exact observance days may vary by country – some countries define the start of the holy month based on astronomical calculations predicting when the new moon will rise, while others wait for the actual sighting of the new moon to declare the start of Ramadan, which may be impacted by weather conditions.
Government offices and private businesses in many Islamic countries in the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Asia will have reduced opening hours during the Ramadan period. In addition, they may close for anywhere between a few days up to two weeks for Eid celebrations after Ramadan.
Any immigration applications still in process or filed during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr may be subject to delays in processing due to reduced working hours at the government authorities. Companies should take these possible delays into account when scheduling assignments to (majority) Islamic countries.
