November 5, 2014

On January 1, 2015, Argentina will make a final step in updating their Foreigners National Identity Document (Documento Nacional de Identidad, or DNI) systems by invalidating any DNI documentation in green booklet format. DNI documentation is required for all Argentinian citizens and foreign nationals residing in Argentina.

First issued in a green booklet format, the DNI documentation has undergone two subsequent updates: in 2011 blue DNI booklets were issued along with an electronic identification card, and in 2013 the blue booklet was eliminated and replaced with a single, electronic card.

However, the Argentinian Registro Nacional de las Personas (RENAPER) has confirmed that beginning on January 1, 2015, all green booklet DNIs will be automatically considered invalidated. Although this announcement is expected to affect only a small portion of the expatriate population in Argentina (primarily limited to those who hold Permanent Residence status), all green booklet holders must update their DNIs to the single electronic card format before the end of the year.

For those foreign nationals who may hold the blue booklet and card format, this documentation will be valid until its listed expiration date. If individuals in this situation wish to renew their residency status in Argentina, they may do so on a normal renewal timeline and will automatically be issued the single, electronic DNI card.

While this upcoming change will not affect many foreign nationals in Argentina, employers with foreign employees in Argentina should perform an audit of their expatriate’s DNI documentation as soon as possible. This will ensure that none of your foreign employees will lose their work and residence authorization. Pro-Link GLOBAL can assist your company with this audit, if requested. A dedicated team will review scans of your employee’s DNI documentation and advise what, if any, action will be required. As with any country, renewal processes in Argentina should begin well in advance of January 1, 2015.
